Campus Climate Index

2011 Campus Pride LGBT-Friendly Campus Climate Index

The LGBT-Friendly Campus Climate Index is a tool for assisting campuses in improving their LGBT campus life and ultimately shaping their students’ and employees’ experience to be more inclusive, welcoming, and respectful of LGBT and ally people. The index is owned and operated by Campus Pride, the leading national nonprofit organization for student leaders and campus groups working to create safer, more LGBT-friendly learning environments at colleges and universities. The index’s primary goals are to 1) set forth a national standard of LGBT and ally inclusive policies, programs, and practices; 2) offer an ongoing, effective measurement tool to evaluate these policies, programs, and practices, and 3) advocate nationally for further progress by highlighting positive efforts.

The Index Tool

The index tool includes over fifty institutional self-assessment questions that correspond to eight different LGBT-friendly factors:

  1. LGBT Policy Inclusion
  2. LGBT Support and Institutional Commitment
  3. LGBT Academic Life
  4. LGBT Student Life
  5. LGBT Housing
  6. LGBT Campus Safety
  7. LGBT Counseling and Health
  8. LGBT Recruitment and Retention Efforts

Questions do not ask for a subjective assessment of how the campus climate feels to any one individual, but rather for specific, objective answers about the existence of LGBT-friendly policies and practices. In this way, Campus Climate Index scores are very concrete and directly comparable across universities and colleges.

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, received an overall Campus Climate Index score of three out of five stars. Our highest score was in the category of LGBT Counseling and Health (five stars), and our lowest score was in LGBT Recruitment and Retention Efforts (1.5 stars). The Commission for LGBT People hopes that our scores will start a conversation about where to concentrate our resources as a campus for improvement in LGBT friendliness.
